Bony Ramirez: Cattleya (at the Newark Museum of Art)
After working construction for years, Bony Ramirez took a bold step during the pandemic by choosing to focus on his art. The young Dominican American artist has since had, as curator Elena Muñoz-Rodriguez puts it in this story, a "meteoric rise." We visit his solo exhibition "Cattleya" (named for the tropical orchid) at the Newark Museum of Art. The new works Bony Ramirez made for the exhibition use his trademark surrealism to probe the legacies of colonialism and tourism in the Caribbean.

It is impossible to underestimate Joe Morello's importance for drumming technique and books with valuable sheet music/technique exercises for drummers - as well as Joe's importance for jazz i.a. at Dave Brubeck and the "quirky" time signatures. But when I hear the solo he plays at the end, I hear a hi-hat playing à la Joe Jones/Buddy Rich as well as the bass drum in the same style. Joe is one of the greats!

I am disappointed that she chose, seemingly deliberately not to mention her race when she was othered. So her husband who can “pass” for Italian is treated respectfully but as a South Asian scholar her effort and her race was negated. Why? Why? Why?

For anyone out there who says that either the cross grip or the match grip is better, should take a look at 1:40 when Joe does both with ease. A good drummer uses anything that works. Joe was a master at everything! I've never heard anything negative about his personality. He was always the humble gentleman who complimented every other musician.

Edward Bowser Jr. hired three of us Montclair High School graduates in the summer of 1974 in the engineering Dept at East Orange City Hall. Right away we began hearing the stories about his importance and status as a professional and community leader. Our grandfather told us how he was also a close friend of my grandfather Mr. Richard L Owens and they were members of the Masonic Lodge. His son Robert Bowser was my boss when I was director of Housing Services before he became Mayor of East Orange.....

“You can’t hide us anymore” would have been perfect if he knew, or maybe he does know and didn’t want to deal with the controversy. “Us” is the ancient people of Yasharel. The people the Christian’s think are Israel. We have actually been scattered all over the world through the Atlantic slave trade and the nation or tribe of “Judah” whose real name is Yahuda name after our Elohim are in America and have been mistreated here for a little over 400 years. The so called African Americans.
